- Journey time: roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on the service.

The Zhengzhou transfer option
If direct services do not fit your schedule, the route via Zhengzhou East is a reliable alternative: Shanghai Hongqiao to Zhengzhou East is about 4 hours, and Zhengzhou East to Luoyang Longmen is a short hop of around 40 minutes. The transfer at Zhengzhou East is straightforward — follow the English signs to the waiting area for your connection. This option also opens up more departure times during peak periods.
Overnight trains — the budget classic
For travellers who want to save a night’s accommodation and a day of travel time, conventional overnight sleeper trains (Z-series and similar) also run on this route. They take considerably longer (around 10–12 hours) and arrive early in the morning, but a soft-sleeper berth can be an economical and memorable way to travel. Soft-sleeper cabins have four bunks, and bedding is provided. Book through the same official rail channel, and carry your passport for check-in.

At the stations
Shanghai Hongqiao is a huge, modern station — allow extra time to navigate to the correct waiting hall. On arrival in Luoyang, taxis and ride-hailing wait immediately outside Luoyang Longmen station; hotels in the old town are about 25 minutes away.
Making it a trip
