The standard route
The site is essentially a single loop:
- Enter on the West Hill (Xishan). This is the main event — the Northern Wei caves and the great Tang niches, including the Fengxian Temple with the 17-metre Vairocana Buddha. Walk along the cliff-face walkway and take your time.
- Cross the bridge to the East Hill (Dongshan). Quieter, with more cave shrines and the classic view back across the river to the West Hill cliff-face. The east side also holds the White Garden, associated with the Tang poet Bai Juyi.
- Exit. The walkway continues and returns you to the entrance/exit area on the east bank, where the shuttle and taxi pick-ups are.
Allow at least two to three hours for the full loop; add an hour if you want to photograph without rushing or join a guide-led explanation. There is paved walking throughout, but the route is long and involves steps and uneven stone in places — comfortable shoes are essential.
Getting there from the city
- Taxi / ride-hailing: about 30–40 minutes from central Luoyang; the standard approach for most foreign visitors. Agree on the destination in writing or show the Chinese name 龙门石窟 to the driver.
- Public bus: several city buses run to the area (for example line 99), with a stop at or near the site. Times and routes change, so confirm locally.
- With a guide or private transport: your guide or driver will handle the route; many visitors pair Longmen with the Guanlin Temple, which sits nearby on the return road into town.
Practical tips
- Night lighting: on certain dates (notably public holidays and festival periods) the grottoes are floodlit in the evening and evening tickets are sold. This is worth checking for — the illuminated cliff-face is one of the most photographed sights in Luoyang. Availability is seasonal and announced by the site.
- Accessibility: the main river-level route is paved and mostly flat, but many cave areas involve steps. Wheelchair users and travellers with limited mobility can see a good part of the West Hill’s lower section.
