Introduction
Luoyang sits in central Henan province, well connected by China’s high-speed rail network but not a major international air hub. Most foreign visitors reach it by train from another Chinese city, or by flying into a nearby metropolis and transferring. This page lays out the realistic options.
By air
Luoyang has a small airport (Luoyang Beijiao) with limited domestic flights. Most international travellers fly into a larger city first:
- Zhengzhou (Henan’s capital, ~1.5–2 hours by rail from Luoyang) — the usual gateway, with domestic connections and some international flights.
- Xi’an — a major ancient-capital pairing and a frequent rail hop away.
- Beijing / Shanghai — long-haul hubs with frequent high-speed rail to the Luoyang area.
Always verify current routes and airport choices when you book; Chinese domestic air service changes often.
By high-speed rail (recommended)
This is the easiest way to reach Luoyang. The relevant station is Luoyang Longmen (洛阳龙门), on the high-speed line. Frequent trains connect Luoyang with Xi’an, Zhengzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and beyond. See our dedicated high-speed rail guide for booking help.
By road
Long-distance buses and private drivers exist, but for a foreign visitor the train is faster, safer and simpler. A private car or guide makes multi-stop sightseeing easy once you’re in the city.
Choosing your route
- Coming from Xi’an? Rail is the obvious choice — pair the two cities.
- Coming from overseas? Fly to Zhengzhou or Xi’an, then rail.
- Short on time? Rail straight to Luoyang Longmen and a guide at the station.
