Introduction
Luoyang has four very distinct seasons. The short version: spring and autumn are best, summer is hot and humid, winter is cold but quiet. Here’s the detail so you can time your trip.
Spring (March–May) — best overall
Comfortable temperatures and, in April, the peony bloom that Luoyang is famous for. The city’s Peony Garden becomes a major attraction. This is peak season: book hotels early and expect more visitors.
Autumn (September–October) — best weather
Dry, mild and clear — arguably the most comfortable travel window. The October Golden Week (around Oct 1–7) is a national holiday with heavy domestic crowds and sold-out trains; avoid travelling then if you can.
Summer (June–August) — hot and humid
Expect high heat and humidity, with afternoon storms. Sites are busier with domestic tourists on school holidays. Go early, hydrate, and use the air-conditioned museum as a midday break.
Winter (December–February) — cold and quiet
Cold, sometimes grey, but peaceful and crowd-free. The grottoes and temples are lovely in low light and you’ll have space. Pack warm layers.
A simple rule
- Want flowers + atmosphere → April (book early).
- Want comfort + fewer crowds → September–October (avoid Golden Week).
- Want solitude + low prices → winter.
- Avoid Golden Week and major holidays for transport and crowds.
