Luoyang is small enough to feel manageable but deep enough to fill several days. Most visitors build their trip around a handful of themes.
See the heritage
The Longmen Grottoes are the must-see — thousands of carved Buddhist figures on limestone cliffs above the Yi River. Pair them with White Horse Temple, traditionally considered the first Buddhist temple in China, and the Luoyang Museum for the broader story.
Walk the old town
Luoyang’s historic core is walkable, with city walls, temples and quiet hutongs. It is best experienced slowly, ideally with a guide who can explain what you are looking at.
Eat locally
Don’t miss the Water Banquet, a banquet of soupy, braised dishes, and the city’s beloved beef soup breakfasts. Our food guide covers what to order.
Make it easy
If you’d rather not self-guide, arrange an English-speaking guide or private transport — see the tours pages. And if you want a day-by-day structure, start from our 2-day itinerary.
