Introduction
Two days is the sweet spot for Luoyang. It covers all four headline sites at a comfortable pace and leaves room for food and the old town. This is the plan we recommend to most first-time foreign visitors.
Day 1 — The headline sites
Morning: Longmen Grottoes
Arrive at opening, spend 3–4 hours on both hills. This is the centre-piece of the trip.
Afternoon: Luoyang Museum
Return to the city and do the museum (1.5–3 hours). The context pays off on day two.
Evening: Old town walk + Water Banquet
Dinner on the Water Banquet, then a relaxed walk through the old town.

Day 2 — Temples and local life
Morning: White Horse Temple
Cross to the east side of the city for White Horse Temple (1.5–2.5 hours), including the international-style garden pavilions.
Afternoon: Guanlin Temple
Visit Guanlin (45 min–1.5 hours) on the way back, then more old-town exploring or shopping.
Evening: Food crawl
Work through the food guide — soup breakfasts, snacks, and a second Water Banquet dish or two if you missed any.

Practical tips
- Stay central: Pick a hotel near the old town or the high-speed rail station depending on your next leg.
- Guides: A two-day private guide keeps transport and context smooth.
- Season: In peony season (April), add the Peony Garden as a half-morning.
